Social and Human Services


Human services is an area for professionals who work in such diverse settings as group homes and halfway houses; correctional, mental retardation, and community mental health centers; family, child, and youth service agencies, and programs concerned with alcoholism, drug abuse, family violence, and aging.

A strong desire to help others is an important consideration for a job as a human services worker. Individuals who show patience, understanding, and caring in their dealings with others are highly valued by employers. Other important personal traits include communication skills, a strong sense of responsibility, and the ability to manage time effectively.

BA in Interdisciplinary Studies (BAIS)

The Interdisciplinary Studies Program offers you flexibility and freedom in planning your degree. But it also has certain carefully enforced rules.

BA in Psychology

The Department offers a variety of upper- and lower division undergraduate courses, which cover all major substantive areas in Psychology as well as methodological issues.  At the graduate level, the Department offers over 20 courses in counseling psychology.  In addition to the regular courses, special topic courses are taught almost every semester.  The Department also provides students with numerous opportunities to obtain research and clinical experience. 

BA in Social Sciences, Applied Track

Students are trained to understand social phenomena by integrating information at the individual, social, cultural, and global levels of analyses.  Ex:  Social Work, Law Enforcement, Teaching, Counseling, or Human Services.

If you want to pursue any type of social work, human services, this degree allows you to get the training you need.  

BA in Social Sciences, Political Science

Students are trained to understand a way of life in its totality: what it is, what it was, and what it could and should be.  Ex:  Journalism, International Relations, Local or National Government, Public Administration, Business, Teaching, or Social Work.

Certificate for Substance Abuse and Addiction Studies

This certificate program is designed to help students meet the state education requirements for certification as a substance abuse counselor and to provide continuing education opportunities for professionals in the addictions field. 

MSW, Master in Social Work

MSW, Master in Social Work – prepares professional social workers for advanced practice with individuals and families within the context of their communities.  Special attention is paid to the multicultural environment, in particular to Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islander and Asian cultures of our communities, state, and the Pacific region. 

Undergraduate Certificate in Peace Studies

The Certificate in Peace Studies is designed to expose students to the central ideas and work in the field, and to supplement study in other academic and professional fields. It is flexibly structured, interdisciplinary, and meant to broaden and strengthen any major in any school.
