Education


The educational services industry employs some of the most highly educated workers in the labor force, as a bachelor’s degree is required for nearly all professional occupations in the industry. Teachers in private schools do not have to meet State licensing standards; however, schools generally prefer candidates who have a bachelor’s degree in the subject they intend to teach for secondary school teachers, or in childhood education for elementary school teachers.

BA, Social Sciences, Early Childhood Education

This program focuses on the preschool years (ages 3-5) from a theoretical orientation which places early childhood education within broader social, historical, political, and cultural contexts. Ex:  Headstart, Home childcare, Public/Private Preschools, or Family Interaction Programs .

BEd, Elementary Education

The Statewide BEd program serves students who live on the islands of Hawai‘i, Kaua‘i, Lana‘i, Maui, Moloka‘i and O‘ahu. The Elementary BEd statewide program begins in May.

Teacher candidates are members of a statewide cohort group that fulfills the same requirements as the campus-based cohort(s).

Kahuawaiola Indigenous Teacher Education

The mission of Kahuawaiola is to prepare Mauli Ola Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian identity nurturing) teachers of the highest quality who are grounded in Hawaiian language and culture to serve in Hawaiian language medium schools, in Hawaiian language and culture programs in English medium schools, and in schools serving students with a strong Hawaiian cultural background.

MA, Indigenous Language and Culture Education

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Indigenous Language and Culture Education is designed for indigenous language and culture education practitioners such as teachers, administrators, culture resource specialists, etc.

MA, Music Education

The Master of Arts-Music Education degree is intended for those individuals who have attained a B.Ed or comparable degree and are currently teaching in the public or private school.

MA, Teaching Program

The Master of Arts in Teaching Program is designed for Hawaii residents with a baccalaureate degree who are interested in becoming a licensed teacher in the state of Hawaii.

For secondary education, students must have a bachelor’s degree in the area of licensure (e.g. political science=social studies, biology=science). Some areas also require prerequisites.

A bachelor’s degree in any major will suffice for elementary education.

MEd, Curriculum Studies, Middle Level Emphasis

The MEd in Curriculum Studies with a Middle Level Emphasis in the University of Hawai’i at Manoa College of Education is developing a solid, local knowledge base, and leadership cadre in early adolescent education. Because of the cohort structure, unlike other emphasis areas in the MEd-CS, admission to the campus program only occurs during even-numbered years, except by special arrangement. 

MEd, Educational Technology

This program prepares students to create resources for teaching and learning through diverse media as well as integrate technology into educational environments. The program places emphasis on applications of technology in educational settings rather than simple technical skills.

MEd, Special Education

Special education (SPED) is a component of general education. Its basic purpose is to assist individuals who do not benefit from traditional educational programs. Special educators teach and help others teach persons who have special learning needs. They individualize and adapt instruction to help individuals with special needs become independent and contributing members of society.

Post-Bacc Certificate in Secondary Education

A certificate program for the preparation of secondary school teachers. It is designed for students who have a Bachelor’s degree and wish to obtain initial basic teacher certification.

The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Secondary Education Statewide offering provides teacher education access to prospective teachers across the state who do not have geographic access to licensure programs.

Post-Bacc Certificate in Special Education

The Post Baccalaureate in Special Education is offered statewide by the Department of Special Education to those with a Bachelor’s degree in any field and desiring a teaching license in special education. There are two programs offered: Mild/Moderate Disabilities or Severe Disabilities/Autism.
